Ottawa favorites HILOTRONS have mostly been seen backing up silent movies for the past year or two, with few proper live performances as a band. That will change Saturday night at Wakefest in Wakefield, QC. Art thou prepared for sweaty dancing madness, young dragon warrior? (Yes, King Lorik!!).

JIM BRYSON & WEAKERTHANS hit OTTAWA this weekend!

JIM BRYSON & THE WEAKERTHANS are finally debuting their folk rock supergroup in town, after successful test drives in Winnipeg, and last weekend at the Wolfe Island Music Festival. The album tentatively titled “The Falcon Lake Incident” will be out later this fall, more details on that will be forthcoming very soon indeed.

This weekend you can catch Jim & the Weakerthans at the Ottawa Folk Festival at these places and times:

JIM BRYSON and THE WEAKERTHANS project hits the stage
If you are in Winnipeg, you are one of the lucky ones on the weather front. And also lucky on the music front as the WINNIPEG FOLK FESTIVAL is in full swing. If that’s your game, you can be among the first audiences of the new Jim Bryson + Weakerthans project. Their album will be released this fall, and further touring will follow, but the first stage test is on Friday night in the 204! Here’s a rundown of Jim’s WFF shows:

As Ottawa Bluesfest opens on its Maiden voyage Tuesday night, Kelp Records is ready to prove this prose of old wrong.

On the Subway stage, enjoy 3 hours of Ottawa’s finest, capped with a special “Kelp Records Revue” featuring the Flaps and Empiricals backing Kelp Records’ favorite vocalists…lots of surprises in store!

JIM in ELPHIN, BURNSTOWN and at OYSTERFEST this weekend!

Jim Bryson has a busy weekend ahead, with three stops around the 613.

First off, on Saturday June 26th, it’s the 5th Annual Elphin Folk & Roots Festival out in Elphin, ON. A lovely community festival featuring Elphinites Jenny Whiteley and Joey Wright, and their pals Luther Wright, and Notre Dame de Grass, to name a few. Great company and a good times guarantee, for those that are considering the trip.

Sunday is a double header. In the afternoon, Bryson will be out in Burnstown at Neat Coffee Shop’s SchoolHouse Stage at 3pm. Advance tickets are $20 and can be purchased by contacting Adam (adam@neatfood.com; 613.433.3205).

That night, Bryson is back downtown at Kent/Arlington. Sunday evening, he will join Fiftymen, the Double Pumpers, the Devillaires and Fish Mafia for the gong show that is the Whalesbone Oysterfest. $25 gets you entry and a meal…from last year’s experience, I will say: get there early!

KELP heads for NXNE!!

NXNE is on this week in Toronto, and we’ll be there to celebrate.

Kelp returns to NXNE with a showcase on Thursday night at Clinton’s, followed by the return of our KELP BBQ on Friday at Global Village Backpackers (King/Spadina) from 12-6pm. Our pals at Beau’s are making the trip down the 401 as well, so look for them at the BBQ!!

Here are all the pertinent details. Thursday is free with a NXNE pass or wristband; Friday is free while there’s room, so come early to eat.

The original CFL Sessions were captured in the 1970s by the late Canadian folklorist Staunton R. Livingston. The tapes (of Canadian football players performing both original and traditional works) collected dust in the National Archives of Canada until the summer of 2008, when they were discovered by resident folklorist Henry Adam Svec. Henry’s performances of The CFL Sessions feature live recreations of Livingston’s recordings and short historical-musicological explications. www.thecflsessions.ca

KELP 16 goes on tour!

We’re very excited to be hitting the road with KELP 16 this year. Traditionally, we have a weekend of shows here in Ottawa.

This year, we’re happy to announce that we’re including TORONTO and MONTREAL in the mix! We hope to see a whack of you out to these incredible shows…one of my musical heroes BILL FOX is coming up to play all three cities. For the uninitiated, in his late teens, Bill fronted a short-lived power pop band called THE MICE in the late 80s in Cleveland. He re-emerged in the late 90s with two stellar solo home-recorded records, only to disappear again. Last year he started playing some live shows in Cleveland, and has done a couple outside of the city, but this will be his first Canadian dates in well over a decade. Needless to say, we’re ecstatic.
