This past Sunday evening, we came together to watch some old timey magic, as Martin Short joined Measha to perform their version of the jazz standard “Misty,” (E. Garner / J. Burke) live at the Windsor Arms in Toronto.

At times tender, at others gut-bustingly hilarious, this duet has the makings of a modern classic. Featuring the piano wizardry of Aaron Davis, the performance was captured and edited in breathtaking black and white by Southern Souls‘ Mitch Fillion and Matt Marek.

This weekend we welcome over a hundred bands to our fine city, as well as nominees for the 2012 Juno Awards. We are going to be hanging out at the Dom Polski most of the weekend, with a few great shows and even a few world renowned poster artists. Did we mention food? Come on down!

We threw together this handy map with some of our favourite places to eat and buy music. Check out these hidden gems (and we are really just scratching the surface here…) of Ottawa in your spare time, and have a great JUNO weekend!

A new entry in the burgeoning Hintonburg hood, take your taste buds on a trip and order a clutch of their small plates.
2. Suzy Q Doughnuts (991 Wellington W)
Gourmet doughnuts. Don’t really think I need to hard sell this one.
3. Art-is-in Bakery (250 City Centre, #112)
Melt-in-your-mouth bread; essential brunch stop.
4. Black Cat Bistro (428 Preston)
Intimate laidback atmosphere and the best place to eat on Preston, Black Cat has been a legend for years in Ottawa, and chef Trish is a true original.
5. Moon Room (442 Preston)
Late night favourite, with stellar wine/beer selection and lovely little plates.
6. Atelier (540 Rochester)
You will shell out, but Chef Marc Lepine just mopped the floor with his opponents and was crowned Canadian Culinary Champion in Kelowna last month. What more do you need to know?
7. Huong’s Vietnamese Bistro (343 Booth)
The Banh Xeo (vietnamese crispy pancakes with shrimp and pork) and their homemade satay soup are weekly staples.
8. Ju Xiang Yuan (641 Somerset W)
Killer northern Chinese menu. Fish hot pot, lamb/tofu skewers and Mapo Tofu are favourites.
9. Pressed (750 Gladstone)
Weekend waffles are a new tradition. Liquor license granted just this week, so will also be a great afternoon haunt from hereon in.
10. Raw Sugar (692 Somerset)
Cafe favourite. A great place to sink into the couch with carrot cake, cappuccino and a new book.
11. Zen Kitchen (634 Somerset W)
Cozy veggie haven in meat-heavy Chinatown.
12. Compact Music (190 Bank)
Vinyl & CDs with a heavy focus on local music!
13. Whalesbone Oyster House (430 Bank)
Raucous after-work hotspot with vinyl on the hi-fi, and an open kitchen serving a cutting-edge menu of delicious sea and land-lubber fare.
14. Birdman Sound (593B Bank)
Legendary Ottawa vinyl haunt specializing in garage/psych/punk/funk/soul/world/outside sounds.
15. Dom Polski SPK (379 Waverley)
Polish Veteran’s Hall where Kelp will be shacked up all weekend for Junofest (see back of flyer for details).
16. The Record Shaap (209 Gilmour)
Watch your head, but once you’re in, feast on Matty’s well-curated stacks of vinyl.
17. Manx Pub (370 Elgin)
A local and tourist favorite, but don’t expect standard pub grub. This is 4-star resto eats at 2-star prices; chef Jarrah is a genius.
18. Oz Cafe (361 Elgin)
Food is well below-market price for the amazingness they are delivering to your mouth. Awesome DJs post up here at night to add to the atmosphere.
19. Murray St (110 Murray)
Chef Steve’s meat heaven continues to impress, and their brunch is top notch.
20. Chez Lucien (137 Murray)
Escape to Quebec City or Montreal’s St. Denis in the comfort of downtown Ottawa. The Hambourgeoisie plate is a hit with us.
21. Los Tacos de Mauro (349 Dalhousie)
Best mexican in town, and who can beat eating on a dancefloor…it becomes a discotheque at night!
22. Vertigo Records (193 Rideau)
Central location with expansive and diverse vinyl selection. Top drawer!

ON SATURDAY FEB 18TH, Kelp presents an all-day event sure to chase away the winter blues. THE WINTER WARMER starts at 11am, and will see local chefs pairing delicious street food-inspired plates with ales from local breweries. Our own ADAM & THE AMETHYSTS and CHRIS PAGE will hit the stage in the afternoon to provide live entertainment while you dine and stuff your faces!

At night, the room will transform into a sweaty dance party, with DJ CADENCE WEAPON and DJ DAVEY handling the musical duties.

Monday night in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Juno award-winning and Grammy-nominated singer Measha Brueggergosman takes to the stage at the historic Seahorse Tavern to record a brand new musical offering. Over three intimate evenings (and two concerts later this week in her hometown of Fredericton, New Brunswick at the Cedar Tree Cafe), audiences will enjoy an eclectic mix of some of the soprano’s favorite songs including selections from the Canadian Songbook, Spanish canciones, Acadian folksongs and gospel hymns. Captured live, a recording titled I’ve Got A Crush On You will be released April 17 via Kelp Records. Special guests who are featured on the new recording will be announced next month.

Musical director Aaron Davis (piano) has brought together an overwhelmingly talented group of musicians for these performances including Robert Piltch (guitar), Marty Melanson (bass), John Johnson (woodwinds), Chris Mitchell (woodwinds) and Dave Burton (drums).

Soprano Measha Brueggergosman is one of the most magnificent performers and vibrant personalities of the day. She has garnered worldwide acclaim as much for her innate musicianship and voluptuous voice as for her incomparable stage presence. More than 3 billion people witnessed her epic performance at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Olympic Games. Film POP & Hilotrons will present Silents is Golden, a night of silent films brought to life with live musical scores from Ottawa’s Hilotrons. Old-film aficionados and YouTube maniacs and everyone with eyes and ears are invited to come discover The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (dir. Robert Wiene, 1920, Germany) along with a collection of short silent films produced by the now-defunct Ontario Motion Picture Board in the 1920s and recently unearthed from Library and Archives Canada’s vault.
